The Ballad of St. Anne's Reel

The Ballad of St.Anne's Reel

E A E
He was stranded in some tiny town on fair Prince Edward Island
H7
Waiting for the ship to come and find him
A H7 E A
A one horse place, a friendly place, some coffee and a tiny trace
E H7 E
Of fiddlin'in the distance far behind him.
A E
A dime across the counter then, a shy hello, a brand new friend
H7
A walk along the streets in the wintry wheather
A H7 E A
A yellow light, an open door, a "welcome friend" a room for more
E H7 E
Soon they're standing there inside together.
H7 A E
He said "I've heard that tune before somewhere but I can't remember when
H7 E A
Was it on some other friendly shore that I heard it on the wind?
E H7 A E
Was it written from the sky above, I think I heard it from someone I loved
A H7 E
But I never heard it sound so sweet since then."

How his feet begin to tap a little boy says "I'll take your hat."
He's cought up in the magic of his smile.
And it leaps the heart insinde him when off across the floor he sends
His clumsy body graceful as a child.
He says "There's magic in the fiddler's arm, there's magic in this town.
There's magic in the dancer's feet in the way they put them down."
Smiling people everywhere, boots and ribbons and locks of hair
Laughter and all blue suits to feast the gowns.

As the sailor's gone, the room is bare, the old piano sittin'there
Someone's hat's still hanging on the rack
Some empty chairs, a wooden floor that feels the touch of shoes no more
Waiting for the dancers to come back.
And the fiddle's in the closet of some daughter of the town
The strings are broke and the bow is gone and the case is buttoned down.
Well off and on in december nights when the air is cold and the wind is right
The melody comes passing through this town.
